If you are big fans of Disney like we are, you have probably received multiple envelopes in the mail inviting you to become members of the Disney Movie Club. If not, here is a link to their website. For many years we wondered if it was too good to be true. You see, there is always a deal when you join and, honestly, it makes it seem a bit of a scam. You get several movies for ridiculously low prices and usually a free gift of some sort. You are then signed up to receive future deliveries of movies chosen by the club with access to additional titles and collectables. Nevertheless, we decided to try it back in April 2018. Let me share our experience with you so you can see if this would be the right club for you to join. The products I am showing you are all from a recent purchase we made and may or may not be available currently.
The Most Important Part
So the main thing about the Disney Movie Club is, of course, the movies. If you collect either DVDs or Blu Rays of any of the Disney properties, this may be your favorite part. There are many titles that are available only to members of the club and often there are special releases available to the club first. The movie set pictured here was an Anniversary Exclusive to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the club. Many movies are available all the time, but some of them are only available for a limited amount of time or a limited amount of copies, so if you are a collector of a particular property, you may want to keep an eye out for those special releases. Depending on your level of membership, you also will have access to several different limited time special offers at any given time. The center of the club experience is the monthly selection offered to all members. Usually a new release, special edition, or club exclusive this movie offer is what the club is build around. There are usually 13-14 of these a year. The main thing to remember is to keep an eye on your emails as they will tell you when a selection is ready for you to accept or decline, because, if you do not decline it, they will automatically ship it to you and charge you for it. You also may not receive all of the special extras if you do not go through the process of accepting it yourself and making sure everything will be included. This is similar to many subscription boxes popular these days and sometimes easier to do as skipping only requires you to sign in and push the decline button. You do need to make sure you fulfill the requirements of membership by buying a certain amount of movies each year, but we never struggle to do that!
Gotta Collect Them All…
If you are a Disney fan who likes to collect rare or exclusive collectables, you may appreciate the club for the opportunities you get to purchase or qualify for some really special items. The main items you often will have access to are lithographs and pins, but I have also seen toys, bags, blankets, accessories, and even special edition bundles of merchandise. Lithographs are usually available only with the purchase of a particular title, especially the monthly choice. The pins are available both in conjunction with a special movie or separately. At a certain level of membership, you can also get a free pin with every order that has a full priced movie included. This is great if you are trying to collect all of them that are available, or if you like to pin trade as most of the pins I have gotten are tradable! As you can see in the pictures above, one of the other types of items we have had access to is the collectible pendants only available this year as they celebrate the 20th anniversary! W once got a pair of Mickey Mouse sunglasses with a case and a cleaning cloth. When we were originally planning on going on a Star Wars Day at Sea cruise before Covid reared it’s ugly head, we found a limited edition Star Wars merchandise bundle that we incorporated in our trip reveal to B and W. The prices are often very reasonable for what you get and sometimes you can get some of them for free with the purchase of some titles.
An Extra Sprinkle of Pixie Dust
Admittedly, the other two parts of the club I have discussed above should be my favorites, but what I like the most is finding special pixie dust they have added to my order. This is something they occasionally do and you usually know ahead of time as it is a part of what they are offering as their monthly package, but sometimes it is a complete surprise! We have gotten special decoration kits for various holidays, pumpkin carving templates for Halloween, craft supplies and kits like the one pictured above, and even Disney character gift sticky tags (which you cannot buy anywhere!) These little items may not seem like much, but they always make me smile and are usually quite fun! This is indicative of the customer service we have received from them over the years and honestly is a really nice touch.
If You Are a Collector, Maybe?
So here’s the thing, if you do not collect any Disney properties, this is not a club for you. If you only stream and never use physical discs anymore, this is not for you (at this time you cannot purchase digital copies only, they all come with physical copies.) If you are tempted to spend a bit too much on Disney collectables, you probably do not need the extra temptation. If you struggle to stay on top of things on a monthly basis, you should not sign up for any monthly delivery clubs until you get that under control (I may or may not speak from experience 😉 ) If you like collecting all your favorite movies, collectables, and like a bit of pixie dust, then this club may be right for you! I would just recommend keeping a clear head and making sure you keep up your side of the club requirements. We really have enjoyed our experience, and even though we buy far fewer movies now with Disney+ there are always movies we want to have in our personal collection, plus the merchandise is just so much fun!
