In the area of Minnesota where I live, you have to take a highway to get to the Twin Cities and for months I would pass this billboard for a local bakery that had a notice that they were featured on Food Network. Now I love food shows and I don’t often get a chance to go places that are featured on any of the many shows I watch, so visiting this bakery was something I put on my must do list. I did some research and figured out it was called Something Sweet by Maddie Lu and was located in the nearby city of Coon Rapids. I spent lots of time looking at their website, especially their to go order option and there were so many things I wanted to try! Go take a look at their awesome website and then I am going to go through our few experiences with them and let you know how it all turned out. I am going to mainly discuss their retail offerings but their custom cake game looks on point on the website, I just haven’t tried it out yet.
What Occasions Are The Products Good For?
One of the things I have enjoyed the most about Something Sweet is that the online ordering menu changes all the time especially for any holidays coming up. I found my visits to the physical location to be similar that there is always a great variety of items and often things that are not on the online menu are available. The occasions we have used them for have been: my birthday, Valentine’s Day, and a First Communion Party. These all fit very well and I have to say I think they would be able to handle any of your occasions. For my birthday, we went as a family to the physical location and I picked a beautiful 8 inch cake that was super tall and just beautiful as well as some other treats too. I do not happen to have a good picture of it but it was beautiful. It was a chocolate cake with buttercream frosting and everyone loved it. The price was higher than you would pay for a supermarket cake of similar size, but it was worth every penny for a super moist and pleasantly sweet cake that was so so pretty. (Seriously, it was beautiful, I am so sad the pictures did not turn out!)
Time for Your Sweets
So you have heard about the cake we had, but what about the other sweet things we have tried? The macarons pictured above were ordered for a First Communion party and were chosen to match the party theme over their flavors but they were still very tasty. I did run into a little trouble when ordering them as when I called to place the order the staff member said the amount was so little I should just order them from the case day of, which turned out to be incorrect advice. When I arrived they did not have the flavors I wanted or anything close to the colors at all. I was about to freak out when one of the amazing staff members stepped in, asked what was happening, and then saved the day. She talked to one of the managers and they pulled the exact ones I wanted out of the freezer (I was super lucky they had some and I went the day before I needed them.) They let me know in future to make sure I order something specific I want ahead of time so they could make sure they had it and promised to remind the staff of it as well. It was a stressful few minutes but was handled very well and we were super happy with the macarons in the end.
Unique Savory Options
A favorite pass time of mine after finding Something Sweet has been looking at what they have available for pick up and when I was looking around Valentine’s Day and my birthday I saw they were doing a run of Charcuterie Boards to go. They had a birthday or Valentines option available and I was so so excited when we got it! It was full of great fresh ingredients, special treats, and lovely sweets. Hubby and I shared it one night and we had an awesome time trying all of the different items. The fig jam was a highlight and I loved that the pickles and olives were in plastic containers so the juices did not get all over everything. The price was great compared to boards you could get at restaurants and we loved that they included a happy birthday pic in the box as well. The other cool thing was that it came packed in a really sweet box with two hearts cut out of the top that would have worked perfectly to take on a picnic or have at home for a date night. Other times that I have looked they have had really big boards you could order, sandwich trays, dog treats, and so many other less-sweet items you can order as well, just keep in mind the menu does change all the time so what is available may be different than what I have shown here.
A Resounding Recommendation From Me
With all of that said and our various experiences, I highly recommend that you give Something Sweet by Maddie Lou a try. We have loved everything we have tried from them and seeing what they are offering even when we are not buying is always super fun. They offer a great variety of sweets and treats and can meet the need for just about any occasion you have. I do recommend calling in advance if you are trying to find something super specific but if you are flexible in what you get, check out their online ordering or just stop by one of their two physical locations (Coon Rapids and Duluth.) I cannot wait until I can stop by again as it has been awhile, but its going to be epic! Have you tried them out before? Let me know in the comments below!
